Slaves:
Slaves were poor and didn't own any land, so they worked for the Nobles in exchange for food, clothing, shelter, and food.They didn't have alot of food, but it was enough to keep them alive. Slaves were considered part of the noble's family, but when they died, wergild was paid to the noble.

Freedmen:
Freedmen were technically free, but some people say that the freedmen lived a harder life than the slaves. They didn't own land, so they borrowed nobles' land. With that they had to pay rent with food or money. If they couldn't pay rent, they became a slave, but they didn't get the protection that the slaves did. Freedman today would be known today as peasants.
